LaPorte County sits at the edge of two major media markets: South Bend–Elkhart and Chicago. The result? We're often overlooked when it comes to both news and weather coverage.
South Bend stations assume Chicago should handle LaPorte—after all, it's a larger market. But Chicago stations are stretched thin, covering a massive metro area and its suburbs. Plus, LaPorte is nearly two hours away from the city, making coverage a low priority. Technically, Chicago is responsible for LaPorte, but in practice, we're just another county on a long list.
Meanwhile, South Bend–Elkhart stations do step in, even though they aren't obligated to by market boundaries. It's a confusing, underserved situation—and that's exactly why LaPorte Signal Weather exists: to close the gap, focus on our community, and make sure LaPorte County never gets left behind.
The Northern Indiana Weather Camera Project aims to bring public-access weather cameras to our region. While INDOT traffic cameras are helpful, they're not designed for monitoring real-time weather conditions. That's where we come in.
We're partnering with local businesses and sponsors to build a dedicated weather camera network—starting in LaPorte and expanding across Northern Indiana. These cameras will give the public and meteorologists better tools to monitor storms, track changing skies, and stay informed. They'll also support tourism and offer special "event" views for festivals, community events, and more.
